It’s been a decade already? Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating a new millennium, and the world not ending! Officially leaving the single digits and venturing into new, not-yet market territory, so many fly things and people came up in ‘09, and we must celebrate:
10: Va$htie Kola
Music video director, party producer, designer and B-girl Va$htie Kola has been on the forefront of style she emerged in the scene in 1999. Starting her career in directing (Solange’s “T.O.N.Y.”, Justin Beiber “One Less Lonely Girl”, and Common’s “Testify”), she later ventured into party producing (“1992″ and “Open”), and later launching her signature line VIOLETTE and VIOLETTE HOMME for men. Va$htie is definitely a girl to watch for!
9. Teyana Taylor
This singer and socialite has managed to keep herself in-demand and relevant through her style and persona. Though the 19-year-old seemingly has nothing professionally of merit, she was undeniably one of the most seen faces of 2009. Whether through photoshoots, brand campaigns & endorsements, Twitter or Ustream, her buzz is up there with the likes of the more talent-relevant stars like, say, Solange Knowles or Keri Hilson. Say what you want about what she does or doesn’t do, but her style is undeniable- and hey, at least she’s google-able!
8. Keri Hilson
2009 has definitely been good to Ms. Keri Baby, her album dropped and was a commercial success, and she had a lot more hit’s than misses on the fashion front. Touring and performing at almost every award show, and picking up accolades for her respected categories in music, she literally kept the hits in coming both in and out the booth.
7. Solange Knowles
*cues India.Arie’s “I Am Not My Hair”* The rebel soul Solange Knowles has always had a very different, very special (in a good way) sense of style, and she brought it all the way home in 2009! Whether it was bold unconventional colored lipstick (a la her green & electric blue lips), eyeshadow that looked like thin sliced Zorro masks in electric and pastel shades, or shaving her hair in the 4th quarter, Solo Dolo definitely never slipped up on style!
6. Zoe Saldana
Zoe was everywhere this year! While I have noticed Zoe since she starred in Drumline and Guess Who, the world didn’t seem to take notice since this year with her movies Star Trek and Avatar, but her acting ability wasn’t the only thing that shined- so did her style! Playing with different looks and trends, she was definitely making the right choices when it came to hitting the red carpets for her many movie premiere’s local and overseas.

The official shoe maker of all shoe makers (and child labor advocate’s, hmph!) Nike has been blazing a campaign trail using Muppet’s of ballers like Leborn James & Kobe Bryant in their commercial’s, not to be outdone, Adidas has snatched up a few athletes of their own and launched their “Lessons In Style” basketball campaign:
The campaign features Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, and Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, and merges their worlds. It’s a very cute commercial, but if I were to do sneakers, it would def be Nike! Sorry Adidas.

Sweet Notes: Marc Jacobs Daisy
While shopping around, I came upon Marc Jacobs’ newest fragrance “Daisy”. Now, I am usually a fragrance skeptic, I can count on one hand how much I have smelled and really liked. Typically, I don’t go for what’s new, I go for what smells good and works for me, “Daisy” is one of those fragrances:
With top notes of bright and freshviolet leaves, and wild strawberries, mid notes of comfortableviolet petals, and jasmine bouquet, and base notes of femininemusk, and vanilla infusion, the fragrance is fresh and feminine, with a playful innocence. The bottle is what pulls you in and the flowers made of soft rubber definitely plays on the feminine theme of the fragrance.
Since the holiday’s are coming, I say purchase this scent for a loved one or treat yourself, and if you love it you can make it your signature scent!
You can purchase the 1.7 oz bottle for $57 or the 3.4 oz bottle for $72 at Sephora.

Beyonce Brings The “Heat”
I know it may seem like she launched her very first fragrance long ago, being that she’s endorsed fragrances like Tommy Hilfiger “True Star” & Emporio Armani “Diamonds”, but this is her first time stepping out on her own:
Her fragrance, tentatively titled “Heat”, will launch on Feb. 3. Heat smells like top notes of red vanilla orchid, magnolia, neroli and blush peach; a heart of honeysuckle nectar, almond macaroon and crème de musk, and a drydown of giant sequoia milkwood, tonka bean and amber. About the fragrance, she said:
“I’m so happy with it. I’ve been working on it for a while now. I was on tour for a year, and I have meet-and-greets with fans. I’ve never in my life gotten so many compliments. Coty has their own testing, but that was my testing! The fans loved it. They were like, ‘I love that, I’m getting that, why isn’t it out right now? I need it!….. “I created this fragrance for self-assured women everywhere, for women who are not afraid to desire and to be desired.”
Letting your fans test your fragrance, nice! Doesn’t get any more personal than that. She also said she was involved in this project 100% and chose everything from the name, to the bottle, to the commercial concepts, everything. As for inspiration about the name and color theme:
“A lot of my performances have had fire involved, so we thought ‘Heat.’ Also, red is one of my favorite colors, as is gold.”
Nice! Here is her commercial for the fragrance:

The 14-year-old half-sister of the famed Kardashian clan, and daughter of Kris & Bruce Jenner, Kendall Jenner, is now a model for Forever 21:
The Jenner sister, who is actually the tomboy of the two younger siblings, is now modeling for Forever 21’s Twist collection, called “Rocker Babes with a Twist”. The 5′9″ cutie pie had this to say about being the new face of the line:
“‘I love Forever 21. I’m glad I got to do it. I was nervous and excited. It was super fun.”
When asked which sister inspires her the most, she says older sister Kim:
“They all give me really good advice. Kim just tells me: ‘Work it.’ I want to emulate her career the most because she does all the modelling-type stuff.”
Can’t wait to see what becomes of the younger siblings.

That Rihanna rain just won’t let up… Rihanna is covering the January issue of GQ and showing us her teta’s… again:
Loving the blonde on her though! I also love how she doesn’t randomly do different styles, she transitions, which makes her progress seem that much more genuine. She also released a teaser of her video “Hard” with Young Jeezy, which will premiere Thursday at 4pm on MTV. Of the style in the video, she says it’s “couture military”:
Can’t wait for the full video. This is my song!

Kelis Did It First… Again!
Back in August 6, 2009, New York Post’s blog had this to say about Kelis‘ new look at the time (her blue hair):
Just like rappers sample other singers tracks, Kelis has taken it upon herself to riff on Rihanna’s new peacock do. And in true remix style, she’s thrown way too much at the original, totally destroying what made it work in the first place.
But just like anything Kelis, she definitely wasn’t the one doing the following, but the one initiating the trends. This was not the first time Kelis was accused of “biting” Rihanna’s style, whether it be with fashion or hair, and behavior like this can be excused when it comes to a site like New York Post (who is in nature, extremely ignorant as it relates to the urban music scene).
You know Rihanna’s new look? The blonde one? Well gues who’s been there done that, took that picture and wrote that book?+
Back in 2004, Kelis shaved off the sides of her hair, and did a long blonde mohawk going down the center. That was 5 years ago, and Rihanna was still on the island of Barbados performing at local talent shows. Fast forward to 2009, and the reigning princess of Pop has done the exact same style, with a slightly lighter shade of blonde. So for the record, Kelis did it first… again!

How could I have missed this? First seen on Chanel’s Fall 2008 runway, these technically advanced shoes is still all the rage 1 year and 3 seasons later. (Seriously, how could I have missed this?):
The shoes are made out of goat skin sprinkled with sequin and the lightbulb heels can unscrew and are battery operated so they can be used over and over again, and cost about $2,200:
